Keep on Trucking through 1972

Just this past week, I finished going through 1199 pages of the 1972 Tulsa City Directory in an attempt to locate an employee listing for my grandpa’s trucking company.  As I’ve mentioned previously, no employee listings can be found so I have tried as hard as I can to re-create a listing by going through numerous city directories.  And because the company was headquartered in Tulsa from 1938-1972, this is an excellent place to start to put together some type of listing.  The only problem is that the Tulsa City Directories are so large that it would take years for me to go through all these years looking for employees. 

To compensate, I have had to identify city directories at various intervals and then go through those years.  In December, I finished my first one for 1961 and found quite a few employees that I didn’t know of previously.  And on a trip through Dallas a couple of months ago, I found a 1966 and 1972 City Directory for Tulsa and made copies of each.  As I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, on a recent trip to the “Baby Clayton Library,” I found a 1942 and 1947 City Directories for Tulsa.  Ultimately, I’ll probably try to copy a 1953 and 1957 Tulsa Directory at the Oklahoma State Archives.  Additionally, Tulsa isn’t the only city to look through.  I’ve got to find some directories for Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Mount Vernon, Missouri, Baxter Springs, Kansas, Okmulgee, Ponca City, Ardmore, Oklahoma and Nederland, Texas.  For me, finding libraries that have these directories are just as challenging as making copies and going through them.

With that said, I finished the 1972 Tulsa Directory recently and found a whole host of names.  There weren’t too many drivers featured like there were in the 1961 Tulsa Directory and that probably means that by 1972, many of the drivers of the company lived outside Tulsa and drove into the Tulsa terminal to get their orders.  The lack of drivers was more than made up by the number of office staff which nicely corresponds to the company’s solid growth during the 1960’s.    So without further fanfare, the Tulsa-based employees of the company in 1972 were as follows:

Now that I’ve got 1972 completed, I’m currently going through 1942 and we’re probably looking for a lot fewer employees.  For one, the company was a lot smaller in its infancy but sampling through the directory still has yielded quite a few employees I know of.  We’ll see how the next search goes with the ultimate goal being to find a fairly comprehensive list of employees, and from there, taking the long-time employees and developing biographies for them.
